Initial discussions about funding Trump tax cuts via cuts in Medicaid, food stamps, and other safety net programs. I wonder how this will impact the legacy Confederate states that voted heavily for Republicans and make up most of the bottom ten states in the Union. What are its chances of passing?

Republican leaders, looking for ways to offset the cost of lower taxes, are considering changes to safety net programs for the poor.

President-elect Donald Trump’s economic advisers and congressional Republicans have begun preliminary discussions about making significant changes to Medicaid, food stamps and other federal safety net programs to offset the enormous cost of extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts next year.

Among the options under discussion by GOP lawmakers and aides are new work requirements and spending caps for the programs, according to seven people familiar with the talks, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Those conversations have included some economic officials on Trump’s transition team, the people said.

However, concern is high among some Republicans about the political downsides of such cuts, which would affect programs that provide support for at least 70 million low-income Americans, and some people familiar with the talks stressed that discussions are preliminary.

“I don’t think that passing just an extension of tax cuts that shows on paper an increase in the deficit [is] going to be challenging,” said one GOP tax adviser. “But the other side of the coin is, you start to add things to reduce the deficit, and that gets politically more challenging.”

The discussions center on Trump’s 2017 tax bill, which lowered taxes for the vast majority of Americans. Major portions of that law are set to expire at the end of next year, and extending those provisions — as Trump has proposed — would add more than $4 trillion to the already soaring national debt over the next decade, according to congressional bookkeepers. The debt exceeds $36 trillion now. Trump also campaigned on a bevy of new tax cuts — such as ending taxes on tips and overtime — which tack trillions more onto the overall price tag.

Saying it out loud.

Nope, we all knew that Republicans don’t care about debt. Borrow and spend!

Interesting. Do you have anything on that?

It depends greatly on where the cuts are.

For example, if we just cut it to states that refuse to work with the Feds on illegal immigration detainers, we could save millions....CA, which by far gets the most in SNAP benefits, could be a massive cut

Meh, that's what you idiots get for primarying all the Blue Dog dems.....It's your fault that most dems are viewed as bat-shit crazy and no longer the party of the working man.

People voted against your insanity.

Nobody believes your ilk anymore.

Government Welfare programs of all kinds are bankrupting our nation... we have to bring back the Clinton policy that says you must work... you can't just sit on your butt and collect goodies from the rest of us... Welfare programs must be a leg up not a lifestyle...

The vast majority of the bottom feeders in Confederate states are Democrats. They are poor and a drag for sure. You guys don't know your demographics at all.

DNC butt bois like Zincwarrior like to pretend southern state blue cities like Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, and Charlotte aren't completely run and populated by DemoKKKrat welfare grifters.

For the millionth time, tax cuts generate more revenue to the federal government. Ask JFK.

They never look at county by county maps when talking about the "poor" Southern states. What they would find is the vast majority of cases is that the poorer counties are blue. It kind of makes sense because that pattern can be seen in every state around the country, save the large urban group-think areas.

Food stamps would be easy enough to cut 90% of the fraud if they had to show photo ID along with their EBT card.
Ok I am going to bite on this one. May be true. The issue for me is that maybe granny cannot get out and then has to send someone to store for her. I am okay with that aspect of it, but I also know I have seen women in the checkout with at least a dozen EBT's and was WTF. So, if you can figure out a way to protect granny errands and still catch the EBTzilla's, I'm in.

Fair enough...I'll cogitate on that one & get back to ya. Gotta be something better than throwing granny over your shoulder & carrying her with you. :D
