(AP) As their convoy reached the barbed wire at the border crossing out of Iraq on Wednesday, the soldiers whooped and cheered. Then they scrambled out of their stifling hot armored vehicles, unfurled an American flag and posed for group photos.

For these troops of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, it was a moment of relief fraught with symbolism. Seven years and five months after the U.S.-led invasion, the last American combat brigade was leaving Iraq, well ahead of President Barack Obama’s Aug. 31 deadline for ending U.S. combat operations there.

That presence is far from over. Scatterings of combat troops still await departure, and some 50,000 will stay another year in what is designated as a noncombat role. They will carry weapons to defend themselves and accompany Iraqi troops on missions. Special forces will continue to help Iraqis hunt for terrorists.

Most do not know shit about the military. They believe that a troop movement happens over night.
Anyone that believes we would abandon an air base anywhere in the world in these times is bat shit crazy.

It no longer matters, this "stunt" has hurt the Dems and Obama... Obama has proved to be nothing more than your run of the mill sell out politician. Obama could dump 50,000 troop back into Iraq and call them "Fun Time Rainbow Support Teams" and get away with pulling another 10k "support troops" out and claim he has shrunk the war.

In this case he lest 50,000 troops and claimed the end of a war while simply planning on moving troops to Afghanistan. You can't really call Obama on his shit because it's not a lie, it's simply his information is meant to be misunderstood... he and his admin is counting on people not understanding what is going on... so like I said, a run of the mill politician.

You remind me of that skit on SNL years ago where the reporters were asking for specific movements of the military.

of course, they have been denied air support and they are sitting ducks, so they are less combat troops than targets, but still

Providing the opposition with targets allows for the reintroduction of troops at a later date. It also allows for Krauthammer and Kristol to get their "I told you so" columns published.

Considering that they've been wrong about virtually every facet of Iraq, to include the need to invade the country in the first place, those two fuckers should keep their mouths shut if they had any decency.

Of course, they don't. So they won't.
