Train shortages?

Some grain elevators are so full that farmers trying to sell their crops are being turned away. But at the same time, flour and animal-feed mills are halting production because they can’t get the grain they need.

The issue? The lack of trains to move the grain.

Federal regulators are holding hearings later this month to look into the causes of the dearth of rail capacity, which the railroads largely attribute to factors outside their control, like the broader supply-chain issues and widespread labor shortages.

But shippers, regulators and rail labor groups say they believe the heart of the problem is that railroads cut too deeply when they eliminated nearly one-third of their workforce in recent years in the name of efficiency.

Could also be that mandatory vaccination has cut into work force. Cut backs due to not as much demand due to lockdowns.
We have heard from some that the only reason that fuel prices are so high was due to lower demand for oil during lockdowns

More of the unintended consequences of big benevolent socialism, according to this 2021 article..

"Railroads are grappling with a weird phenomenon that is a combination of “labor shortages” and 12.6 million people still claiming some form of unemployment compensation, amid stimulus-fueled demand."

Labor shortage for railroads that have slashed workforce by 33%.

Anything is possible but I have not read about any of these companies having such rules

Yes, this is a part of it.

There are so many parts to what is going on in our country right now.

Just trying to highlight some of them

Yes, that was a problem for sure, went on way too long. But it has been more than 6 months since all the extra UE ended so seems people should have ran out of free money a while ago

IDK. I had to wait for a never-ending train the other day on a N&S line. Probably the longest train I've ever had to wait for.

We'll be like Italy where a train has never been on time

Maybe if Mayor Pete breast pumped less....ya know

Tell us all.

What actions would you like the Fed Govt take to solve this problem?

And then tell us if there is any problem ever that you do not think the Fed Govt should fix for you?

Well every time something goes amiss the .gov wants to deploy the National Guard to pick up the slack.....Maybe VA doctors can be deployed running trains after they get done with Tater's border crisis.

Jokes aside the railroad industry is FUBAR (both management and workers) and most of this is of their own making.

Completely demoralized’: US railroad workers pushed to the brink

.....staffing shortages and supply chain issues have been self-made in the industry, as drastic labor cuts have been implemented in recent years, reducing the workforce and lowering overall costs.

Hell they have even went to a one man "crew" is some areas.

How about authorizing the building of a pipeline from Canada, so the railroads don't have to transport so much oil?

Ooops. A little bit late for that one. :laughing0301:

Another "labor shortage" problem that is fake news. The trains ain't running so it's someone's duty to work those jobs. Uhhhg well then YOU who think this is actually a problem need to go work on the trains.

This might be one of the dumbest things you have posted yet. People leaving one job to go to a different job is not really the answer. Should nurses leave her job as nurses to to work on trains then we can have a shortage of nurses.

There are just under 1.5 million people in the US receiving unemployment payments right now.

How about those people get off their ass and go to work

There is no labor shortage. People are working. A couple of people quit their jobs and it gets called the "great resignation". It's laughable. If an employer can't find workers that's all on the employer.

Somebody else is using our rail system.
