SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) ā Bond was denied during an emotional hearing for the man officials said is responsible for the deaths of two children in Spartanburg.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, Eri Perez was driving on Asheville Highway on Sunday afternoon when the car ran off the road, hitting two children who were riding their bikes.
The car hit nine-year-old Mikhail-Lee Smith and 12-year-old Dereon James Robinson.
The Spartanburg County Coronerās Office said the boys were taken to Spartanburg Medical Center, but both died from their injuries around an hour later.
During the hearing, Spartanburg County solicitor, Barry Barnette, said when state troopers arrived at the crash, they could easily tell Perez was heavily intoxicated.
āThey smelled a strong alcoholic beverage coming from him. His speech was so slurred he couldnāt convey any thoughts or answer questions,ā he said.
Barnette added that Perez had bloodshot eyes, could not stand on his own, and was unable to complete a field sobriety test.
Perez later admitted to troopers that heād been drinking heavily during the weekend.
Deputies said there was a passenger in Perezās car at the time of the crash, but he fled the scene before investigators arrived. He has not yet been located by authorities.
Perez has been charged with two felony counts of DUI resulting in death, driving with no license, and violating open container laws.
The two felony charges carry 25-year sentences each, according to the solicitor.
Dereon Robinsonās mother, Megan Wilson, and his brother, were walking alongside the boys when the crash happened.
At least SC wonāt be trying to protect him from the āevilā ICE.
