Obama got his stimulus package, and had control of both houses, and did nothing. Those shovel ready jobs, wasn't so shovel ready.

According to a website which maps the location and speed derived from Amtrak’s train tracker app, the train was going 81.1 miles per hour just before it derailed on an overpass. That part of the track is designed for only 30-mile-an-hour speeds. Passengers say the train never slowed before it flew off the rails.

A head-on crash in 2008 between a passenger and freight train in Los Angeles pushed Congress to mandate the use of PTC on systems of all major rail lines. While the changes originally required compliance by 2015, there have been hold-ups by Republican controlled congress due to high costs. So this train didn't have one yet.

If the train is moving too fast, the computer on board the train warns the conductor.
In an emergency, the train’s on-board computer can override the conductor & apply the brakes.

Besides slowing and stopping trains that are cruising too fast, Positive Train Control could also be used to prevent collisions between trains (since the system would know where each train is), keep trains from rolling into work zones, and stop trains from cruising through track signals left in the wrong position.

PTC could have been in place, but Washington is too busy spending the money on illegals and carbon.

Railroads have had all that since before GPS.

Speeds are supposed to have been determined before the train gets there. From what I hear this one was going more than double the determined safe speed, much the same as that train wreck in Philly a while back. GPS can't do anything about that.

To me is seems crazy that we have airplanes that can takeoff and go from point A to point B and land with automatic pilots, we have cars that can now drive themselves, but trains that run on the same tracks everyday are still controlled by man and subject to human error.

Today is not a proud day for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

The agency spent close to $800 million of federal funds on a so-called high-speed rail project between Seattle and Portland –only “so-called” because top speeds would be just 79 mph, which is conventional rail.

Much of the money was spent upgrading existing tracks to give passenger trains a shorter (but less scenic) route through and around Tacoma.
