KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — By plane, motorbike, camper van and even on bicycles, tourists are beginning to discover Afghanistan, with solo travelers and tour groups gradually venturing into a country that until recently was wracked by war.

And the country’s Taliban government, which seized power more than three years ago but has yet to be formally recognized by any other nation, is more than happy to welcome them.

I am not sure why anyone would want to visit and benefit the government of a country that treats women and minorities like cattle? Afghanistan, as long as it is governed by the Taliban, will always be an uninviting, dangerous country to visit. Make one wrong move or speak ill of the ruling party and you may end up in prison in a third world country or worse. Wait, that sounds a lot like the US today.

Lots of places are dangerous, I traveled around southern Africa for three months using local transport. Dangerous, yes, but nothing happened to me as I took precautions.

Some people want to experience something different. The last new country I went to was India, and I was kind of bored, the same abject poverty you can find in many places. Maybe Afghanistan is different. Maybe people just like traveling.

They can tour the CIA poppy fields. Another big attraction is the Museum of American Military equipment

The big story here is our wasted billions and lives and in the end the country being the same as it ever was.

What a waste. On top of that, we learned nothing.

I wish we still had the tax money that we spent on our ventures into Iraq and Afghanistan.
