Inside a Brooklyn hospital that is overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients and deaths
Brookdale Hospital, which began seeing Covid-19 patients at the beginning of March, said it now has more than 100 patients who have tested positive for the virus, and 78 additional patients are hospitalized as they await results. As of Sunday, at least 20 patients had died after contracting the virus.
The hospital sees over 100,000 patients annually, and has a capacity of about 300 people at any given time, Khari Edwards, the hospital's vice president of external affairs, told CNN.
But with coronavirus cases rapidly increasing, there has been an influx of patients.
Already, the hospital has started to open up floors that have not been in use for years to make room for more patient beds, Mollette said. The hospital has also converted its pediatric emergency department into a Covid-19 isolation area, she added.
To separate the space from other wings of the hospital, health care workers hung plastic sheets from the walls, and used duct tape to prevent them from falling.
"I can say that every corner every part of the hallway, every room, every space has been filled up to capacity with our patients," Mollette said.
Inside the ER, a cacophony of coughing filled the room as one nurse walked through rows of filled beds to feed a patient juice.
Meanwhile, the ICU is quieter -- as the lulled beep of machines, including ventilators, reverberates.
The hospital's morgue is also overflowing.
Edwards said the morgue can usually hold around 20 people, and the hospital's already "gone over that" number.
The hospital now has a refrigerated truck provided by the state to help with the overflow of bodies.
"What's more so terrifying is you have family members who can't come pick up normally as they lose a family member," Edwards said. "Funeral homes are swamped."
Health care workers have already begun preparing additional beds in anticipation of having even more patients in the coming weeks, Edwards said.

"The enormity of the coronavirus pandemic is still unfolding. The true toll of COVID-19 won’t be known for many months, but the best-case scenario is probably roughly ten times as bad as a severe flu season, with a particularly brutal impact on the elderly and sick."

"At every step, a rapaciously profit-driven health care system and an austerity-ravaged state will make this virus harder to manage."

Alone Against the Virus

Perhaps the exponential spread of Corona-19 provides an opportunity to rethink "globalization"?

CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza

So why are hospitals having to hire refrigerated trucks to help store bodies as they pile up? Did you even read the article?

The article is from CNN so it is already suspect. The democrat lapdog media has become America"s Pravda only not as honest.

Really, so you actually do not thing this is happening at hospitals in New York City? Where is your evidence to show that hospitals in New York City have NOT had to hire refrigerated trucks to store the overflow of dead bodies?

Use caution but I hate how leftist politize something and ignore what we face everyday
I agree this is hype to point. Here is why.

Of those who contract the flu only 0.1% die. Of those who contract COVID-19 death rates are as high as 15% in some countries. The US currently stands at 1.49% but we have now tested more people than the rest of the world combined.

The flu we have a base line immunity for, COVID-19 we do not. thus its potential to spread uncontrollably and kill is much greater. We are already seeing hospitals and care systems in the US become overwhelmed.

If we had not taken the actions Trump has instituted, at the medical communities and Dr's suggestions our deaths from this, by modeling, would top 2.2 million people here in the first wave alone.

We are just beginning to deal with the deaths in NY and all bodies must be cremated.

Yawn when this year's flu season is over with get back in touch. We have over 22,000 flu deaths
Do you really think that’s a wise way of looking at this?

Yea, it's call perspective.

CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza

Looks like Covid19 isn't nearly as bad as the flu.

Do you really think that’s going to remain true?

Only time will tell. But I know that 34 MILLION is a hell of a lot more than 700,000.
Not everyone has the luxury of sitting back and saying things like “time will tell”.

So why are hospitals having to hire refrigerated trucks to help store bodies as they pile up? Did you even read the article?

COVID-19 is bad, on paper its worse than the regular flu. However, with mitigation measures like social distancing, washing hands frequently, sheltering at home, etc., we hope to reduce the number of infected and dead to much less than the predicted 2.2m w/o mitigation measures. Fauci estimates 100,000 to 200,000 is a reasonable guess as to the deaths for COVID-19 even with mitigation measures.

Dr. Fauci's numbers may not factor in the new medication approved yesterday, hydrochloroquine or the newer faster tests, or hydrochloroquine in combination with other drugs. Also, will COVID-19 stop for the summer like a flu?
The Brooklyn deaths are bad, but they are generally the older weaker people who have weak immune systems. Tragic but those deaths don't necessarily predict the same death rate in the rest of the country.

"At every step, a rapaciously profit-driven health care system and an austerity-ravaged state will make this virus harder to manage. "

This doesn't exist. Insurance Companies MUST spen 80 cents of EVERY premium dollar collected on Claims. If the don't they send out refunds. Dumb *ss.

How often during season flu, do hospitals have to hire refrigerated trucks to store the overflow of the dead?
How many flu deaths do we have?
