First the problems.
1. You need to see a flight surgeon who will give you the medical examination.
2. You need to shop around at the airport of your choice hunting for a flight instructor who owns their own airplane and the bonus is it will likely cost you less than at a FBO. What is a FBO? Fixed base operator. These are likely corporations that sell airplanes and do repairs to them. They earn more money when they have as staff some flight instructors. Unlike the flight instructor I advise, they also have good sized expenses with commercial buildings and sales staff to sell airplanes. I trained at a Piper dealership who had instructors and certified air mechanics. I found a private instructor who trained my oldest daughter for about 12 hrs and she then had to go to college.
3. The license is for life. If you violate FAA laws, you will then lose it after what amounts to a trial.
4. Every 2 years you must go back to a flight surgeon and he will verify you are in proper health.
5. Every 2 years to stay current you must also be tested again by a flight instructor who has proper FAA credentials. If they pass you, you keep flying.
6. There are ways to save money. You can work with an airplane owner and work a deal with them to rent their airplane. Fuel of course will be your expense.
Benefits. When you want to fly hundreds of miles, you will get there much faster. You don't need the TSA bugging you. You can take unexpected side trips that you desire. You can save money over commercial by carrying more with you.

Finally you will get views of nature like you probably never had. The views from a private plane are better than in commercial planes. And you will fly around on your personal schedule.

I hope some of you want to learn to fly and enjoy this sort of experience. Best to you.
