The reason was to receive damaging information on Clinton from the lawyer in question:

DT Jr. met with the lady briefly to see what she was all about but no information was actually exchanged, her proving very non-credible. Hard to imagine that anyone would need MORE damaging info on Hillary or what that could be but I'm sure we've only seen the tip of the iceberg on that *****. THE BIG LIE HERE is that DT Jr. didn't know what he was getting into until after meeting with the woman. Bottom line, nothing really new here in the annals of national and global politics and the worst thing that happened here is that DT Jr. should have included the meeting in his intelligence briefing disclosure, but apparently dismissed the meeting because soon after meeting the lawyer to see what she was about, and realizing it was all a spoof, he walked away. He did the right thing. It was one of hundreds of incidental contacts.
