It was not much of a precaution----but it might have helped. I've read of "some people" saying opening schools puts childrens' lives at unacceptable risk. That's not really true. A statistically speaking very small number will die, and a larger number will get really sick and have some possibly lifetime disabilities - but even that number is statistically speaking very small. "Some people" will say but any number of dead/disabled children is unacceptable. And that would be true UNLESS the danger to kids and adults from opening schools was LESS than keeping them closed. And schools provide food, abuse prevention, medical screening to kids in addition to education.

What we're seeing in Fla (and maybe Ariz, Tex, CA and Ga) is the increasing possibility that because people refuse masks and social distancing the hospital capacity will be overwhelmed. IF THAT happens, people will die not just in higher numbers from corvid but also from other viral infections, and bacterial infections (like meningitis) car wrecks, heart attacks/stroke) WHO WOULD NOT NORMALLY DIE. AND THAT'S THE REAL PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS.

Pelosi would be correct if what she's saying is that opening schools will RESULT IN MORE OVERALL CORVID CASES THAN KEEPING THEM CLOSED. She is correct about that. Kids will become carriers of Corvid even if they don't appear deathly ill.

So the question becomes whether assholes who don't mask/socially distance are already using up so much hospital capacity that increasing the number of infections by opening up schools in a state creates an unacceptable risk to exceeding the hospital capacity for everyone.

Trump's re-election chances may hang in the balance. Few things are going to turn off suburban moms than their kid coming home from school with a virus they may not have gotten otherwise. Schools are being forced to re-open. The federal government is supplying, apparently, NOTHING in terms of more buses so kids can avoid sitting next to one another, funding for more teachers so class sizes can be reduced, or even an advisory against the activities where kids are going to be congregating. All they are providing is threats that schools must reopen.
