Trump has raised the issue again in recent days in response to reports that he pressured the newly elected Ukrainian president to investigate the Bidens during a phone call in July.

Here's the context for the sentence.

Trump Twists Facts on Biden and Ukraine

President Donald Trump once again twisted the facts to claim that Joe Biden, as vice president, threatened to withhold “billions of dollars to Ukraine” unless it removed the prosecutor general who “was prosecuting” Biden’s son, Hunter.

In May, Ukraine’s top prosecutor at the time said the younger Biden — a former board member for a gas company in Ukraine — was not investigated.

“Hunter Biden did not violate any Ukrainian laws — at least as of now, we do not see any wrongdoing,” Yuriy Lutsenko, Ukraine’s then-prosecutor general, told Bloomberg News. Lutsenko, who resigned in August, said a corruption investigation into leaders of Ukrainian gas companies concerned a potential money-laundering transaction that had occurred before Hunter Biden joined the board.

We wrote about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine four months ago, when the president made a similar claim in May on Fox News. In that interview, Trump said that “the [Ukraine] prosecutor was after his son,” referring to Biden’s son, Hunter.

Trump has raised the issue again in recent days in response to reports that he pressured the newly elected Ukrainian president to investigate the Bidens during a phone call in July. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump urged “Volodymyr Zelensky about eight times to work with [Trump’s personal attorney] Rudy Giuliani on a probe that could hamper Mr. Trump’s potential 2020 opponent.”

We have seen this sort of effort to divert attention away from a negative story on Trump before.

Podesta: Wikileaks dumps done to divert Fox News’s attention from ‘Access Hollywood’ tape

John Podesta said Wednesday that daily Wikileaks’ dumps of his emails in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election were meant to “divert attention, at least to give the anchors on Fox News something to talk about other than the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape.”

“The data from your emails, your email dump came out only minutes after the ‘Access Hollywood’ [tape was released],” MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell said to Podesta, who served as Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, during an on-set interview on Wednesday.

{mosads}”Late on a Friday afternoon,” replied Podesta.

“And just to set the context, most of those Wikileaks dumps were early in the morning to drive the news cycle here in the U.S.,” Mitchell said. “So this was unusual from the get-go and you guys noticed it right away.”

Roger Stone wanted WikiLeaks dump to distract from ‘Access Hollywood’ tape, Mueller witness says

Stone was indicted Friday, accused by the special counsel of lying to Congress about his quest for information about WikiLeaks’ plans to release information damaging to the Democratic candidate. According to the indictment, Stone was assigned this quest by “senior Trump Campaign officials.” And he allegedly enlisted two friends and intermediaries in the effort, including Corsi, identified in the indictment as “Person 1.”

Whether Stone had a hand in the advantageous timing, by influencing the dissemination of the purloined emails, could help investigators answer the question of why he, and others in Trump’s orbit, allegedly lied in responding to congressional queries about possible collusion between the Republican campaign and Russian officials who interfered in the race. When asked by Melber why Stone lied, Corsi said, “I failed to take the mind-reading course at Harvard. You’ll have to ask Roger.”

........is the Senate report, chaired by Sen. Grassley (R), on the investigation in to Hunter/Joe/Burisma. It is an extensive account, covering Hunter's involvement with Burisma and Chinese companies, that rightly points out conflicts of interest regarding Hunter Biden's foreign business activities. While scolding Joe Biden and the Obama admin for, in the Repub's opinion, ignoring conflicts of interest...........NO WHERE DOES IT CONCLUDE THERE WAS ANY WRONGDOING ON JOE BIDEN'S PART.

Why are we still talking about this matter? For the very same reason Trump introduced it to the public in the first place. To hurt Joe Biden's chances in his quest for the presidency.

This is one of the big problems Trump had. He expected others to do all the work. He was incapable of executing and overseeing an investigation himself. It might have cut into his golf and Twitter time.
True. But the larger point is the entire Hunter/Burisma/Joe canard was designed to be a smokescreen to distract from the Orange Menace's extortion of Zelensky.

Biden's a criminal extortionist.

Trump pushed on that, and the DeepSwamp wilded him.

I believe both Trump and Biden should be investigated over Ukraine.
The Biden's has already been investigated by Repub lead congressional committees.

Republican senators' investigation into Joe Biden and Ukraine has come up empty.

The Senate Homeland Security Committee had been conducting an investigation into the former vice president's dealings with Ukraine, and committee chair Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) admittedly hoped to prove Biden's "unfitness for office." But an interim report of their ongoing investigation released Wednesday doesn't do that.

Republicans have long sought to find some kind of collusion between Biden's vice presidency and his son Hunter Biden's work at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, seeing as Biden led Ukraine policy during the Obama administration. Attempts to dig up dirt about Biden and Ukraine sparked the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, and after that concluded with no conviction, Republicans have been trying to turn the tables on Biden.

But as Johnson told The New York Times in the days before the report's release, the investigation found no "massive smoking guns" regarding Biden. The report relies largely on a quote from career diplomat George Kent, who said Hunter Biden's work with Burisma made things "awkward" for State Department officials focused on Ukraine. But it doesn't relay any improper influence or wrongdoing by Biden, nor does it confirm Republicans' accusations that Biden tried to oust Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin to protect his son from an investigation.

Trump Revives False Narrative on Biden and Ukraine - FactCheck.org

WASHINGTON — An election-year investigation by Senate Republicans into corruption allegations against Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his son, Hunter, involving Ukraine found no evidence of improper influence or wrongdoing by the former vice president, closing out an inquiry its leaders had hoped would tarnish the Democratic presidential nominee.

The investigation found that Hunter Biden had “cashed in” on his father’s name to close lucrative business deals around the world. It also concluded that his work for Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy company then mired in a corruption scandal, while the former vice president was directing American policy toward Kyiv had given the appearance of a conflict of interest and alarmed some State Department officials.

But an 87-page report summing up the findings, released jointly on Wednesday by the Senate Homeland Security and Finance Committees, contained no evidence that the elder Mr. Biden improperly manipulated American policy toward Ukraine or committed any other misdeed. In fact, investigators heard witness testimony that rebutted those charges.

Doesn't explain why we have wasted billions and billions of dollars of our future generations wealth starting and funding (but not paying for) a stupid war there.

Then you are welcome to start a thread on the subject. This one is about Trump's attempt to divert attention away from his extortion of Zelensky by creating a false narrative about the Biden's.

No, this one is a Trump-hate bait thread.

The only kind this idiot ever posts.

Must be nice to get a paycheck for sitting on one's ass.

And I can note in such a thread I'm not sure it's all false.
