Politicians do not plan for the future of the country, they plan for their next election, and it’s really hard to get elected if you tell people the entitlement gravy train is going to slow down while taxes will either raise or at least stay constant. Add to that the pork spending spigot is shut off, and you likely won’t find an elected official who will get on board. As for the idea that we can copy what Sweden or Switzerland did- it’s hard to scale. Those countries have much smaller populations and GDPs compared to the US. In fact we have at least 5 states with larger GDPs than those countries.
