This Is Why You Don't Feed Raccoons

Fyi

Many people assume that raccoons are rodents, but they're from the procyonid genus. These small mammalian carnivores have powerful jaws and teeth. Distantly related to cats and dogs, they share a common evolutionary ancestor with bears. Endlessly adaptive, raccoons are among the more intelligent mammal species.

They're just big fat rats. Vermin with stripes.

good move----did you call the local animal control?------uhm---the operative word is RABIES-----rabbis is those people doing a job
today

Not everybody lives in NYC. What 'animal control' do you think exists in most of the country, exactly? lol Whitehall is the 'animal control' where he lives.

I'm pretty sure country people know about rabies; they aren't the ones camping out in the summers and trying to pet bears and moose, and cuddle the 'cute lil animals' they see on those Saturday moroning nature shows put on by 60's stoners to bullshit the kiddies into believing 'Nature' is benign and just like a Grizzly Adams TV Show.

Useful wild animals are the tasty ones; the rest are pests.

raccoons show up even in ------the metropolitan area and people DO NOT KNOW

Lol the woman seemed awfully surprised. The only thing that surprises me about this is that it didn't happen sooner. We get raccoons here but they only eat what we give the birds and squirrels so we don't specifically feed them.

looks like a scene from the show Parks and Rec. (entire sections of the town were said to be overrun by gangs of racoons)

No fair lol I take back what I said about the coat and the meat and the vegan shade.

In rural areas, animal control falls under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's Dept. They might send a Deputy out to look at the animal and he would say "yep you killed him alright" and you throw a shovel full of dirt on the critter. If a dog is running loose and harassing or attacking livestock the unofficial solution is to shoot it and bury it. Everyone agrees including the Sheriff. If you are bitten by a suspected rabid animal you shoot it if you can but not in the head and go to the emergency room. They would check the animal in that case.

The ignorance and fear in this thread is astounding

About what? And what happened to the raccoon? Anyways, I'm glad that he's doing okay. I actually do like raccoons even if they are pests and I would much rather watch them than eat them or make a coat out of them but I don't have a problem with hunters who do.

How in the heck did the raccoon family she fed, communicate to the 100 other raccoon, that she was friendly, and had food?

I bet ya, those 100 raccoon all extended from the babies of the alleged one family mom and her litters that the lady fed over the past decade years!

My older sister is like that lady, and feeds a handful of raccoons every night, cat food...

Well, she's been doing it for twenty years, so I could just see her being invaded with all the raccoons from all the different litters she's fed!!!

We have two raccoons that feed here with the deer corn we put out for our deer herd that comes...the raccoons come out with a pair of skunks that they are friends with and likely share an underground cavern with them in the winter to hibernate... Because they leave together for the winter, and they come to the backyard together out of hibernation or their hiding place together in the spring....and they eat, side by side.... One of the raccoons is HUGE, like radiation mutant huge, 3 times of the other raccoon she hangs with....I've never seen her with a small litter, she always has 7 or 8, and she is so big, I've seen her out at the paved road , trying to cross it to get to the woods on the other side, with all 7 cubs on her back! We named her Big Mama, we never named the smaller one, we just call her The Runt! Deer will eat along side the raccoons too...

The deer are scared to death of skunks....if the skunk is there at the deer corn the deer won't go near it....they try to circle the skunk about 10feet from it, to get it to leave but the skunk pays no attention to them...the deer will also just pace back and forth on its head side, until it leaves but they are smart and won't get closer than 10 ft, and will never place themselves on the skunks back side....always the face side....

One can live quietly with the animal neighobrs if common sense is used and followed.

Feeding a wild animal is not a wise thing to do, but I have a dear friend in Ohio who has done it for years.
