Again that never should have been a function of the federal government and, however well intentioned, it did little or nothing to actually improve education anywhere. But get federal government meddling out of education and encourage the local communities to educate their kids, and I'm pretty sure American initiative, innovation, ingenuity, work ethic will put us back on top within a generation or less.

In 1979, we did not educate every student in the US. If you were handicapped, you didn't even attend school. If you were poor and stayed home to work on the farm, no one cared. If your school did not have enough funding to employ proper teachers in minority schools, you were just SOL.So when Jimmy Carter established the Dept of Education in 1979, the USA was No. 1 in the world in public education.
The USA is now #31. Even Russia ranks higher.
Now tell me again how the Dept. of Education has improved education in the USA and/or is essential to it? It obviously doesn't educate kids and doesn't seem to be effective in anything else either. So why not close it down? The few useful functions it has can easily be transferred to another government group to administer.

Common Core did not fail. That is why it is still being used. I would bet you could not find CC standard with which you disagreed because it tells you what children should know, not how they learn it. The ignorance of Common Core is almost as bad a plague on us as COVID was.
