Putin has the Russian economy hot wired so that everything runs through him. Presumably it is so he can take his cut but it's also designed so that his sudden removal locks up vast wealth in offshore accounts and no one gets a paycheck. The livelihoods of millions of Russians depend on him allowing money to flow. That's probably the only thing keeping him alive right now.
