The reality is that humans are inherently social, with instinctive empathy for all other humans.
When human ancestors came down from trees to live on the ground, the lack of armor, fangs, claws, speed, etc., meant their survival depended entirely upon cooperation as a group.

That strengthened over millions of years.

The Mideast was the exception.
The Mideast turned from swamp to desert in only a few thousand years, forcing humans to crowd into riverbanks, develop agriculture, technology, tools, weapons, etc., and to begin preying on other humans.

This aberration is contagious.
The Egyptians passed it to the Greeks, who created the Romans, who then spread it through Europe, where England was the last colonial imperialist, and the US is their latest offshoot.

The founding fathers were largely made up of enlightened gentlemen; they downplayed the importance of religion because of all the infighting between the different Christian sects. And the English background made them certain that they did not want to establish any type of State religion. The United States was founded as a financial / prosperity venture.

Yes and no. The government paid to put the subways in ( our tax dollars ). The privilege to use them must be paid by the user. It's the source of income that keeps the subways running. Most of the people who use the subways are poorer people. I could see a discounted rate for a really needy, but the government can't keep paying to keep them running and running. That's our obligation.
