they do play dead

My dog caught a possum and it laid there until the dog lost interest. It came around and walked away. They do play possum but they are really dumb animals. The only marsupial mammal in the U.S.

This is an Opossum, not a possum. There is a difference. And they aren't dumb. Neither do they "play dead"

When threatened, opossums enter an involuntary physiological state called tonic immobility or thanatosis, which is a natural defense mechanism. This is often described as "playing dead". It's a response to extreme stress, and opossums have no control over it.

pretty sure with the halloween decorations this is the USA and thus as you stated it would be and Opossum, right?
therefore it got scared and went into it's shock state as shown

per AI possums can play dead too......as a defense mechanism

How to tell someone is from Michigan? They call it an "Opossum" instead of a "Possum".

" A rose by any other name would smell as sweet "

All I know is, the one my dogs caught pissed all over them. A horrible stench. 10:30 at night and I'm bathing dogs... That was a night to remember...

They are dumb enough to be the most common dead carcass on the road and the spelling "possum" is in common usage and permitted except by picky tight asses.

Didn't work in my yard. Possum just stood there looking at my dog barking her head off, until I grabbed the dog and took her in the house.

I would have let the dog off its leash. I bet that would be the last time that possum just stands there and stares. No free rides for my pets, they must both retain mastery over their yard, avoid getting hurt or beat up badly, and stay out of my hair.

And they generally do, partly because they have a home worth fighting to the death for plus they know if they fail to get er done, there will be an even bigger, nastier animal waiting for them back inside the house. :SMILEW~130:

it took the time to piss on your dogs and why would their piss be any different than any other creature?
they don't piss in defense

skunk do but not piss, spray......sure that's not the cause?

trust me, I hit a skunk on my bike as a kid crossing a sidewalk at night, that it not urine smell.....not even close

I thought that was the armadillo...
Equally dumb assed animal but it depends where you live. When I worked the 4-12 shift in the rural Va. Shenandoah I swear that possums used to cross the rural road on suicide missions. On several occasions I had to stop the truck until they did whatever it was that they did. Vultures gotta eat so that's maybe why possums evolved.

Yeah, that's what I want, to kiss some animal on the nose which eats road kill for a diet.
opportunistic, they will eat whatever they can find

some dogs eat their own shit! so yeah might not want to kiss your dog without a good breath mint doggie chew

Only the opossum is native to this part of the world.
Try to be open to learning without being an arrogant prick

You are correct, it was opossum spray...

Is the smell of opossum spray similar to the smell of skunks?

Opossums and skunks are both known for their ability to produce a strong-smelling spray as a means of defense. While the smell of opossum spray may be somewhat similar to that of skunks, there are a few key differences that can help distinguish between the two.

First and foremost, opossum spray is generally not as pungent as skunk spray. Skunk spray contains sulfur compounds, such as thiols, which are responsible for its distinctive and overwhelming odor. Opossum spray, on the other hand, does not contain as high of a concentration of these sulfur compounds, resulting in a less potent smell.

Another difference lies in the overall composition of the sprays. Skunk spray contains a mixture of chemicals, including the previously mentioned thiols, as well as various other sulfur-based compounds. Opossum spray, on the other hand, primarily contains a compound called Z-7-dodecen-1-yl acetate, which is unique to opossums. This compound is responsible for the characteristic scent associated with opossum spray.

In terms of smell, while both opossum and skunk spray can be described as musky or foul, skunk spray is often described as having a stronger, more pungent odor. Skunk spray has been likened to the smell of burning rubber or rotten eggs, while opossum spray has been compared to the scent of a decomposing carcass or stale urine.
