A nitwit would simply look at our negative trade balance with Japan and believe there is a problem. But based on the facts, I see the situation as favorable to our side taking into account the comparative size of each country.

• The U.S. has a population 2.75 times that of Japan.
• On a per capita basis, for 2024 Japan's imports from the US is $638.
• That compares to the $436 per capita that America imports from Japan.
