I thought Paula Poundstone was one of the best standup comics ever. She had some kind of scandal I don't remember the details but she just disappeared.

Women comedians have trouble attracting a male audience because their act is mainly just bitching and complaining about everything.
If a guy has a wife or a girlfriend, he can hear plenty of that at home without going to a comedy club to hear more of it. ...

Very few can be. And of those who are successful, most are not funny. It is the same droll look with everyday comments and a percentage of the comments being snide.
