Yes - drug laws are racist. Drunk driving is a super violent drug crime and should be punished much more severely than mere drug possession. But since most legislators are white and drunk drivers, our legal system continues to treat DUI as no big deal.

But our drug laws do not disenfranchise most druggies since most states (though not all) let felons vote.

Yes - drug laws are racist. Drunk driving is a super violent drug crime and should be punished much more severely than mere drug possession. But since most legislators are white and drunk drivers, our legal system continues to treat DUI as no big deal.

Felony convictions and some outrageous sentences effect a lot more than just voting priviledge. Fatherless households...hiring discrimination ensuring that blacks convicted of minor pot possession will only get the dredges of emplyment if any when they are released and attempt to re-enter society. It puts preasure on released convicts to do risky things to make any kind of living at all. Sure...there are bad people that just happened to get arrested for a little pot but most people arrested for a little pot didn't start out as carear criminals. Then they may commit to buying and selling drugs and end up getting caught up in turf war violence. A kid who would have never even considered shooting someone before going to prison gets shown up close and personal what's up when kindness is taken as weakness. If all drugs were made legal to some degree there would be no gangs or shootings over turf.

I'm not suggesting that access to all drugs be free and without regulation. If the actual cost to produce any illegal drug substance was reflected in it's price from a pharmacy or liscenced retailer there would be 99% less property and violent crime in this country.
