It is well worth noting that most here immediately went to food as their metric for poverty.
Poverty is so much more. It is sub-standard housing..or no housing at all. It is homeless families, at risk from all sides.
It is sub-standard schools and it is exposure to high-risk situations that lead to injury and loss of life.
Children that grow up in poverty have a far lesser chance of being successful and a far greater chance of prison and early death.
It is, and has always been, an American disgrace

There will always be poor because poverty is relative. In a land of billionaires the millionaires are poor. In San Francisco $105,000 income a year is poverty. Individuals making less than $105,000 classified as 'low income' in SF

Our poor are wealthy beyond the dreams of most of the world. We have the fattest and most overfed poor in the world. Our poor are so stuffed that they suffer from heart disease and diabetes.

If there are hungry children it's the fault of a caregiver. There is, EBT, WIC, AFDC, SNAP and DSNAP. That's followed by school feeding programs. It's not enough food. There are community food banks, charities and pantries. Our poor are so overfed that hunger is replaced by insecurity. The poor are food insecure. This means that a person does not have what they want and don't know when or how their needs will be fulfilled. When beggars of well over 200 pounds cries about hunger it's hard to take them seriously. This is a country where only the wealthy can afford to be thin.

Obesity and single parents seems to be the biggest problem with "needy" kids these days.

Most malnurished kids of the depression years had worms and other manner of parasites feeding on them.

The obesity is even higher among poor people. This is because the cheaper food they eat is high in sugars and low in nutritional value. It makes people fatter while also leaving them feeling less full. This is often the food that people rely on, when they are living hand to mouth.

You wish a comparison between 1964 and 2024 regarding rates of poverty in the US? Go for it. Factor in that as much as those on the Left have fought poverty..those on the Right have obstructed them..every step of the way. Nonetheless, the poverty rate has gone down..and the hunger rate has dropped drastically..due to school lunch program and Food Stamp..called SNAP today--also fought tooth and nail by the Right--add to that a far stronger social safety net, including a right to medical care that simply did not exist in 1964
