Theodore Edgecomb, 32, of Milwaukee, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the September 2020 of killing Jason Cleereman.
Prosecutors said Edgecomb shot Cleereman, 54, in the head after a suspected road rage incident on the Holton Street Bridge.
Edgecomb claims he acted in self-defense.
He took the witness stand Tuesday morning in his own defense.
Edgecomb said he feared for his life after being hit by the Cleereman's SUV.
He said he wished he felt with the altercation differently.
An investigator from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office testified that toxicology results showed Cleereman was legally intoxicated at the time of his death.
Cleereman's wife testified last week.
She told jurors the couple was heading home from a Brady Street bar – where she said her husband had three or four beers — when a bicyclist came out of nowhere.
The altercation was captured on surveillance video.
It appears to show Edgecomb on his bicycle ride up and punch Cleereman through the open passenger window.
Edgecomb said Cleereman's wife nearly ran him over on his bicycle.
As Cleereman got out to confront him, Edgecomb pulls out a gun and shot him.
A detective testified that Edgecomb fired once without warning.
His defense attorneys are trying to convince the jury the victim was the aggressor.
They questioned the widow about whether her husband "chased" Edgecomb when he got out of their car.
Cleereman was carrying a folding knife in his pocket but there's no indication he threatened Edgecomb with it.
The case has drawn comparisons to the Kyle Rittenhouse case in Kenosha.
The same defense use-of-force expert was expected to testify Tuesday.
Judge David Borowski warned the two sides not to make comparisons to the Rittenhouse case in front of the jury.
"I don't care what he testified about in that case. I do not care. He will testify under the law and the facts of this case," he said in court.
Investigators have never found the murder weapon.
Edgecomb testified he threw the gun out the window of his car while fleeing Wisconsin.
Twelve of the 13 jurors hearing the evidence will decide the case.
Edgecomb fled the state and was arrested six months after Cleereman's killing in Kentucky.
If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence.
