the story of the jews

That is so confusing. But..I want to see it too, so thanks for the heads up.

Sure thing Gracie :)

IMHO?

If there's a bunch of Jews involved? It's gonna be confusing.

Lemme tell ya. I got an 'in'. :D :D

Joking aside. The highlighted pertains to Israel.

:)

I want to DVR that, too. Ropey, is there a documentary on TV about this history, you would recommend?

[ame=http://youtu.be/BuNB4EeoKi8]#1111- Abraham One Man One God - YouTube[/ame]

Abraham discussed/argued/mentally wrestled with G-d in order to save the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

This is the real meaning of the name "Israel".

Israel means to discuss/argue/mentally wrestle with G-d. G-d decided that these arguing people could have the job to hand out the 10 Commandments to man.

G-d saw that Jews were people that were not to be kept down and destroyed as a people and that they would rise back up each and every time his word was in jeopardy. This is what was foreseen by the prophesy of return.

:)

Hmm. I think I might be interested in that book too, AA.

It surely is a world-wide hit. And I set my DVR to record PBS tonight, too. How interesting that will be. I have to watch the powerful The Voice at 8, or I would watch PBS. I love my DVR. I don't even Roku or Hulu, or Netflix, anymore...:D :D

I have always been fascinated by the story of the Jews. My favorites are David, Joseph and Daniel. You can watch the movie "Joseph" on youtube. It's awesome. So is "Abraham". Richard Harris does a very good portrayal.

:smiliehug: Thank you, my man.

Well...who watched? I found it fascinating...but confusing as well. And the guy narrating...he seemed positively peeved sometimes. So, overall...I am glad I watched it.
However, I wondered something, so I googled it. Thought some might wanna know the answers I found since nobody seems to know..not even Jews.

"Why do Jews bob and weave as they pray or read the Torah?"

Conservative Responsa in Israel - Masorti Responsa - Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies - SIJS

I learned this as davening which is to turn the pages of the mind's memory in rhythm to the soul's yearning. Some do this with their lips and some can get right into it and move in sway. I learned to move in sway and how to yearn in my early years as a child. On the high holidays I prayed to sit down more than anything though. :)

I consider davening as the yearning for greater connection depth in meditating Scripture as it was taught me.

Gracie I watched it as well and also found it fascinating. As to the bobbing and weaving, I was told they were to pray using every bone in their body.

The lips have no bones. It's about creating a connection.

The same way the torah is sung, moving in a rhythm brings a meditation or ecstasy in the speaking of the prayers quietly to one's self. The body preforms a mantra while the mind speaks the prayers.
The winding of the leather straps touch acupressure point on the body which help open the mind and body to what the chinese would call chi or energy.
Science can now begin to explain what the jews took on faith.
Yogi stand on their head or induce pain, sufi spin, christians kneel and recite a rosary, some fast, others sing, there are many ways to bring about a mental or physical sense of stimulation. For some it would be a rush of blood to the brain or a tingling of the body that would mimic a feeling of being high, or of absolute clam and heightened awareness of every sound and movements. I expect it would be a bit like an out-of-body experience feels like you are touching heaven or have reach nirvana.
It should in theory be a form of self hypnosis that allows one to speak to god, or hear god. To reach beyond the confines of the body and expand the mind.

'The Story of the Jews' review: Absorbing - Newsday

I thought some might find this interesting.

Like gentile poster, Aris, here's another greater thinker on the Jewish people:

“Certainly, the world without the Jews would have been a radically different place. Humanity might have eventually stumbled upon all the Jewish insights. But we cannot be sure. All the great conceptual discoveries of the human intellect seem obvious and inescapable once they had been revealed, but it requires a special genius to formulate them for the first time. The Jews had this gift. To them we owe the idea of equality before the law, both divine and human; of the sanctity of life and the dignity of human person; of the individual conscience and so a personal redemption; of collective conscience and so of social responsibility; of peace as an abstract ideal and love as the foundation of justice, and many other items which constitute the basic moral furniture of the human mind. Without Jews it might have been a much emptier place.”

- Paul Johnson, gentile, British historian, author of A History of the Jews

This gentile reader is in full agreement. Without Jews it would have been a much emptier place.
