Colin Powell is stepping forward to speak for the moderates in the Republican party. After being slammed by Cheney and Rush, Rove took a shot at him too. Now Powell is emerging as the voice of what remains of moderate Republicans.
It appears that much of the hard right is pushing away more centered members of the party and the moderates, even high profile moderates, are defecting. The numbers of self identified Republicans are extremely low, the election lost, both houses and the Presidency. There is no apparent party leader other than a talk show host that has no aspirations to office.
Will the party broaden it's base, as many observers say they must? Can the republicans be a viable party if they do not expand the base? If they don't, will a third party emerge or will the Democrats keep power simply by default?
