When you are entrusted with high-level public responsibilities, the expectation is that you are always available. Top officials like Mr. Austin occupy what is known as the PAS level—presidentially appointed, Senate confirmed. PAS officials don’t even accrue vacation days since they are assumed always to be on the clock.

There is no defense for this. Emergency surgery would be one thing, but this was all planned. Austin sits just below Biden at the top of the chain of command of the US military, and his duties require him being available at a moment’s notice to respond to any national security crisis. That includes always being ready to enter secure communications with other officials in the event of an incoming nuclear attack, something that would be difficult to do from an ICU bed. The idea you wouldn't inform the president, is inexcusable.

Except it wasn't "emergency" surgery.

It became an "emergency" days later due to extreme pain, nausea, and an infection. The thing is, he never told anyone about having the surgery to begin with, nor the emergency hospitalization days later.

It was literally ten days after the surgery, that he returned to the hospital as an emergency. The WH knew nothing of the original surgery, nor the return to the hospital ten days later.
