I have called for something like this several times on this forum. The Democratic Party has put together a plan to move forward and once again be competitive against the Republicans
There is a new group called "The Third Way", and they got together a few weeks ago and defined the problems and the solutions that need to be found.
The Third Way is a moderate group. Here is what they came up with:
It is evident that they have a big hill to climb, but then again, Trump seems to be taking a "hacksaw" approach, and it seems to be working in reducing the size of the hill. As such, over the next 21 months before the next congressional elections, the hill might actually become a valley.

However, since you name no names, and neither does your link, I have to assume this "third way" group is imagination and wishful thinking, on somebody's part.
Perhaps an attempt to make it come true, by announcing its existance?
Still, it is worth talking about.
For this hypothetical group to move forward, in terms of voter support, it must first distance itself from the current Democratic leadership, who is dragging the party backwards in terms of voter support.
Not by attacking personalities, though that will be tempting, but by very straightforwardly acknowledging the many mistakes of the past which have necessitated this "third way" about which you speculate.
By not attacking the personalities, you invite recalcitrant dems to join this new movement.
The one mistake that would be fatal to this movement would be to pretend that it is not changing, that these new reasonable stances have "always" been their positions, or some artful way to put it, such as "our values have not changed."
Sadly, I think even Democrats who see the need for this third way, would be unable to resist the temptation to play cute and pretend they are not changing their minds.
The voters have had about all of the Democrats 'cuteness,' i.e. clever wordplay and "pwning" of Republicans that they are inclined to take.
