Eric Adams. This one is so blatent you would think it is a joke but it isn’t.
Eric Adams’ administration had been under investigation multiple times during the two years of his term in office. This resulted in a criminal brought against him by the US Attorney for the Southern District of NY. Specifically: conspiracy to defraud the United States, wire fraud, and soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals and accepting a bribe. That was September 2024. His constituents were not happy, his fellow Democrats weren’t happy and there were widespread calls for his resignation and then…
In walks the Trump administration with its quasi-legal deportation priority and Adams gets invited to Maralago for an audience with the king. He emerges with promises to support Trump’s immigration agenda and everything gets dropped.
Well…sorta…kinda…
The thing is…the indictment is left hanging, to be resurrected at a future (unspecified) date.
There is no other way to describe this beyond blatant corruption. They aren’t even trying to hide it.
The judge was pissed and
said the obvious in his ruling.
Judge Dale Ho dismissed the case permanently -- depriving the government of the right to revive the charges at a later date.
The Department of Justice had been accused of requesting dismissal in exchange for Adams agreeing to enforce Trump's immigration crackdown -- with a view to potentially holding the prospect of reinstating charges over the mayor's head if he did not follow through.
"Everything here smacks of a bargain: dismissal of the Indictment in exchange for immigration policy concessions," Ho wrote.
