My wife is a pharmacy technician and has been for a long time. Guess which are the most requested and prescribed drugs, and which have the longest backlogs to obtain? Yup, the weight loss drugs. She actually had a patient on the phone who was really, really mad because her insurance company wouldn't cover one of them, and who literally complained, "I have to gain weight so I can qualify for the weight loss drug". If that doesn't illustrate the state of our healthcare situation, nothing does.

I keep thinking, why do the surgery when they are losing all that weight without it. Many gain weight even with the surgery. According to the show only 5 percent of these people are successful. I wonder if the surgery actually hurts them in the long run more than it helps them.

The poster child for bariatric surgery is Al Roker, but he only weighed about 360 pounds when he opted for it. These whales often top 700 pounds.
