So when has the NRA gone to court to proactively protect the 2nd? If you knew a new gun owner what would be an excample of the NRA protecting our rights that you could give as a reason to join?

NRA Bylaws Article II
The purposes and objectives of the National Rifle Association of America are:
1. To protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, especially with reference to the inalienable right of the individual American citizen guaranteed by such Constitution to acquire, possess, collect, exhibit, transport, carry, transfer ownership of, and enjoy the right to use arms, in order that the people may always be in a position to exercise their legitimate individual rights of self-preservation and defense of family, person, and property, as well as to serve effectively in the appropriate militia for the common defense of the Republic and the individual liberty of its citizens;
2. To promote public safety, law and order, and the national defense;
3. To train members of law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, the militia, and people of good repute in marksmanship and in the safe handling and efficient use of small arms;
4. To foster and promote the shooting sports, including the advancement of amateur competitions in marksmanship at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels;
5. To promote hunter safety, and to promote and defend hunting as a shooting sport and as a viable and necessary method of fostering the propagation, growth and conservation, and wise use of our renewable wildlife resources.
The Association may take all actions necessary and proper in the furtherance of these purposes and objectives.

Hey man me to. They say they do and have all along, so what specifically have they done? They can take credit for stopping any gun control that I can find so maybe they have been doing a bunch of smaller cases in lower courts. Anyone know of any proactive measure the NRA has taken to protect the 2nd?

Most of my family were card carrying members of NRA----until they got involved in other issues. Dropped that shit ASAP. The NRA is not a branch of government.

Awesom, if there are a litny of PROACTIVE law suits toss a link to one or two, and one or two SPECIFIC pieces of legislation in Congress . Not CCW reciprocity either. I mean a law they fought for and got passed that cements the rights of gun ownership in this country.

Trudat, but they do stuff. Stuff like making it impossible to Fire employees who smoke dope and drink beer out in the open across the street from work, or keep cops who beat their wives armed and on the job. But what has the NRA done?

The problem is the NRA for years has been nothing but a partisan rightwing mouthpiece involving itself in issues having little to do with its bylaws or protecting the rights enshrined in the Second Amendment.

No, they are a lobbying organization.

They didn't start lobbying until the 70s and 80s. There were a lot of gun owners. It was not uncommon for people to have rifles.

And fuck lobbyists.

The personal right argument finally prevailed in the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. The court said that the right was not “absolute” and that it was subject to “reasonable restrictions.” Moreover, that initial ruling dealt only with a right to have a gun for self-defense in the home. Still, gun owners and the NRA quickly turned it into a legal rallying point to challenge a whole host of gun controls; they did not regard the new right as limited at all.

Their cause advanced much further, in 2011, when the NRA was part of a winning coalition in the Supreme Court case of McDonald v. Chicago, extending the personal right protection to put some limits on state and local gun control laws, too. The Heller decision had struck down only a Washington, D.C., law banning handguns. Moreover, the McDonald decision made clear that the new right was a “fundamental” one, establishing it as a right of the highest constitutional order.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Thanks. NRA member so I can ask you. Hopefully the thread don’t turn into a fist fight or fizzle out to fast. What are some things the NRA could be more aggressive on as far as legislation gos?
