I just saw an interview with a sandwich shop owner in Portland. The pandemic had her shut down. The riots destroyed her shop. What could be looted was looted. The rest was burned to ash. She tried to hire workers to help clean up. The workers were threatened and some beaten. She was bewildered. Why can't we work together she plaintively beats. She doesn't understand. If the police won't come to be brutal why beat up someone just going to work?

As long as people are bewildered by violence they cannot be helped. As long as people think it is possible to capitulate enough, they cannot be helped. Portland may just have to be abandoned.
