Was in Auschwitz-Birkenau und anderen deutschen Konzentrationslagern unter der Nazi-Herrschaft passiert sei, „das ist Teil unserer Geschichte und damit auch Teil unserer Identität, mit der wir uns auseinandersetzen müssen“, sagte er bei einem Besuch des ehemaligen Lagers, in dem zwischen 1940 und 1945 mehr als eine Million Menschen ermordet wurden - vor allem Juden.


Er reagierte er auch auf eine Äußerung des US-Milliardärs Elon Musk, der am Wochenende in einer Video-Botschaft für eine AfD-Wahlkampfveranstaltung bemängelt hatte, dass Deutschland „zu viel Fokus auf vergangene Schuld“ lege. Auf eine Nachfrage dazu sagte Steinmeier in Auschwitz: „Ich glaube nicht, dass Herr Musk auf meine Ratschläge wartet. Aber meine Überzeugung bleibt: Verantwortung kennt keinen Schlussstrich.“ Wer immer glaube, man könne jetzt einen Strich darunter machen, dem empfehle er, „jetzt hierherzukommen und das Gespräch mit Überlebenden zu suchen“.

What happened in Auschwitz-Birkenau and other German concentration camps under Nazi rule “is part of our history and therefore also part of our identity, which we must come to terms with”, he said during a visit to the former camp, where more than one million people were murdered between 1940 and 1945 - mainly Jews.

He was also reacting to a statement by US billionaire Elon Musk, who criticized Germany for focusing “too much on past guilt” in a video message for an AfD election campaign event at the weekend. When asked about this in Auschwitz, Steinmeier said: “I don't think Mr. Musk is waiting for my advice. But my conviction remains: Responsibility knows no end.” He recommended that anyone who believes that a line can now be drawn should “come here now and seek a conversation with survivors”.
