it could be called the inofficial romantic national anthem of Germany.

I once adapted the poem to tell how i once met a beautiful girl in Britanny. She was sitting on a small rock in the Atlantic. Like a Lorelei.
I went through the water to greet her, and other than in the song i did not drown.
So started a life-long German-French friendship.

..... it made me think of her again!

Very friendly and calm. The concrete and cement on the buildings and streets were cracked and uneven so you had to step carefully, especially in the dark. Trabants and Wartburgs were common. Very few restaurants and difficult to find them. I often took the U-bahn to Friedrichstraße to buy chocolate and liquor and I always went to see the May Day parade and listen to the microphone reminding everyone how Berlin was Hauptstadt der DDR and ”Wir leben Hoch! Hoch! Hoch!” I feel nostalgia for those days.
