Watched this last night. A load of absolute rubbish and sad that it was Sturges last film.
Top quality cast and from a Jack Higgins novel that was popular at the time.
Michael Caine plays an unconvincing German officer locked up for trying to save a young Jewish girl. Basically a clumsy attempt to get the audience onside.
Robert Duvall plays the madtermind with an eye patch. Presumably to hide his embarressment.
The plot is a rehashed what if. In this case what if the germans try to kidnap Churchill.
It lacks any tension and I fell asleep before the end.
Donald Sutherland mangles an Irish accent as the IRA man at war with england. It unbalances the film its so bad. Particularly when he is trying to chat up an 18 year old Jenny Agutter.
All the locals are sardboard characters speaking mummerset and its a wasted hour.
If you want a really good "what if" film on the same subject try Went the Day Well. It is light years ahead of this rubbish.

I was looking forward to it. I guess the book was better. I also reckon they packed it with American actors to sell it in the US. There was a lot of that in the mid 70s.
We wernt making films that people watched.
