I've seen to far too often. People who become seriously ill getting desperate. Many get taken advantage by schemers and frauds. Many follow the advice heard from celebrities and other non-experts. Many believe the most outlandish claims without demanding any evidence. Hope. They all hope. Hope never cured a disease.
In January 2025, Mel Gibson told the influential podcaster Joe Rogan that three of his friends who previously had Stage 4 cancer no longer had cancer “at all.”

They had been cured by the antiparasitic drugs ivermectin and fenbendazole, Mr. Gibson claimed on an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” that has been viewed on YouTube more than 13 million times.

There is no high-quality evidence that ivermectin has any benefit for cancer patients. Fenbendazole is not approved for human use. Still, in the months after that episode aired, prescriptions for these drugs jumped significantly, according to research published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. The highest prescription rates were among men, white patients and those in the U.S. South.

The increase was especially pronounced among cancer patients: The rate of prescriptions from January through July 2025 more than doubled compared with the same window the year before. Oncologists said they worried their patients may delay or forgo effective therapies while turning to these unproven treatments.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Donald Trump promoted the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, often mentioning it in combination with zinc, as a potential preventative or treatment, despite warnings from health officials. He disclosed in May 2020 that he was taking the drug, along with zinc, as a preventative measure. This prompted widespread concern among health experts, as studies showed it was not effective against COVID-19 and could cause serious cardiac issues.
  • Disinfectants and Light: In April 2020, Trump publicly asked his science officials to research whether injecting disinfectants (like bleach) or using UV light into the body could kill the virus.
