the biggest problem with public schools is

Yes, even the lousy lib educators would be different (and better) if not for the culture they grew up in
Society 'broke all restraints' back in the 1960's. I blame Les Paul and the electrified guitar. :omg:

AFAIK - There is your problem. Like most people you are uneducated regarding education. It's not your fault. Everyone frames education in their own experience which most of the time is atypical.
Had to return to this comment.

If everyone's educational experience is 'atypical', what stands as 'typical'?

Who has more experience with education (in real time).
The teacher who teaches one course multiple times in a single day, or the student who attends multiple courses with multiple teachers in a single day?

I cannot control society and neither can you. Let's work on educating those who want to be educated and just lock all the others away on some deserted island. Sound good?
Or we could explain to our students that what is to be learned is not difficult, and the only legitimate excuse for not learning is mental defect.

I taught multiple courses each day, at least two and sometimes 4. I taught applied math, algebra, algebra II and pre-calculus at various times. In social studies I taught government, American history, World History, economics, law and justice, and life skills. I often taught social studies and math at the same time. In one school, I taught the exact same students math in the first year, and social studies in the second year. Teachers now usually teach in teams, meaning the same students are in each teacher's class, they move from one to the other. I was a team leader before I became an assistant principal where I had 4 teams of teachers.

Were you taught that way? That is why your education is atypical compared to now.

We rarely had the same teacher for different courses in the same school class, although some teachers taught advanced subjects to the same kids as they progressed through the grades.

That's a bit harsh to most liberals and that is why parents get offended. Tell a student that and see how long you last in the job. Moron!
Why would a teacher get fired for telling students one of the most important things they will ever hear?

In the military schools the instructors don't tell you that you can learn this stuff, they tell you that you will learn this stuff.

I would tell the kids this in a constructive way. I recall some teachers telling us this (that we all had the ability) but they didn't persuade all of us. I consider it an important key to opening a student's mind.

That's exactly my point. You have no clue as to what is done in education today! You are Methusaleh.

Public schools are not the military. You didn't sign up for school. If there was anyone on God's green earth that knows that it would be me. 23 tears active and reserve in the Navy and 21 years teaching, 7 years of that overlapping.

If you were to say those exact words, the parents would be burning you in effigy in front of the school.

You said, "the only legitimate excuse for not learning is mental defect". I said a kid was slow getting started working once and had the school board called on me by the parent of another student, because they thought I meant she was "slow" as in retarded. Saying they had a mental defect will definitely get you fired.

You continue to be clueless as to the environment we teach in. Why don't you volunteer as a substitute teacher if you have the qualifications? (Which I seriously doubt!) You could see it from the inside! You said you wanted to help!

So, a teacher, knowing how easy a course is, could never say that 'everyone should be able to learn this'? Most courses aren't tailored for the brightest students, are they?

Unk, come out of your bubble and into the real world.

I'm 1000 miles further into the real world than you are, champ. Your assisted living facility is NOT "the real world."
