the biggest problem with public schools is

The idea of personal responsibility has been eroded away from our society. We used to let people who overdosed just go ahead and die. Now, we have NARCAN so they can do it multiple times!
Interesting. There are three options and only one is the right one. We have chosen the other two. Sad, but not surprising.

*Compulsory treatment is the only good option.

You can lead a horse to water... Does that ring a bell?
Not much, it's in the hands of parents and the school system. I just offer suggestions. :)
What suggestions have you offered? I must have missed them.

Most recently, if the foundation for learning is not forged by parents it's up to the school to do it. Prior suggestions were, dress codes, no phones, smaller classes, mentoring by other students, and strict behavior standards. Standards of dress and behavior cannot be left up to the students.

Edit. I would add more rigorous reading exercises as well.

All of that has been tried and failed! Where have you been the last 25 years?

They get paid to do that above and beyond their class costs. They charge fees for that and give no credit. Should public schools do the same?

Once again you prove your cluelessness.
Why handicap yourselves as teachers by not doing this? Once a good foundation is laid you don't have to do it again. Seems to me to be a good investment in the teaching/learning dynamic. Also, I'm talking about the lower grades where this can be identified and corrected.

What makes you think we don't? We don't want to, because we shouldn't have to!

You have laready admitted you are old as time itself. You have never been a teacher, so how do you know what the heck teachers do today? Hint: This is not the 1950s anymore.

Have you ever heard of state funded pre-school, Head Start and programs such as that? We had them. They are all epic failures and endless money pits!

They failed because the kids weren't ready for them. For example, I had "Civics" in 8th grade. I got a B in the course. It was way over my head even though I got a good grade. Same with "POD", Problems of Democracy. Totally wasted on HS kids. These are college graduate level subjects.

Wouldn't teaching be easier if the kids were prepared to learn?
