This is a game that is absolutely shocking for how drastic, defeating, and even unlucky it was for the Phins... it's actually impressive, I'll leave a link to the game highlights at the end. Truly a beat down greater than any I've ever seen.

The Jimmy Johnson/Dan Marino Miami Dolphins experiment was at its end when the Dolphins came into Jacksonville for a 2nd round Divisonal playoff game vs. the Jaguars. Miami (9-7) had beaten Seatlle 20-17 to travel to the awaiting 14-2 Jacksonville.

Here's a play-by-play of insane plays in this game:

1st Quarter:
  • First Jax Drive: TD PASS at 10:32. 7-0 Jax.
  • Marino immediately throws a wild interception, 45yd FG. 10-0 Jax
  • 90 YARD TD RUN FRED TAYLOR. 17-0 Jax.
  • STRIP SACK OF MARINO ON 1ST DOWN, JAX RECOVERS AND RUNS IT TO THE HOUSE. 24-0 Jacksonville
2nd Quarter
  • 1st play 40 YARD FRED TAYLOR SCREEN TD: 31-0 Jacksonville
  • JACKSONVILLE BLOCKS A PUNT, Recovered on 20 yard line
  • 1st play 20 YARD RUN FOR A TD: 38-0 Jax w/12 min left in 2nd Q
  • Marino throws interception next play, Jax ball on Miami's 40 (Jax missed FG)
  • Marino throws WR screen but THAT"S ACTUALLY A LATERAL, RECOVERD BY JAX
  • Marino completes pass, FUMBLE, RECOVERED BY JAX. FG Jax: 41-0.
  • Marino TD pass as time expired in half. 41-7.

Miami 5 turnovers, 41-7 at halftime.

3rd Quarter
  • Miami 3 and out, 70 YD TD PASS BY JACKSONVILLE: 48-7
  • Miami 3 and out, 40 YD TD PASS BY JACKSONVILLE: 55-7 (6:20 lef)
  • THE FIELD SPRINKLERS ACCIDENTALLY TURN ON

4th Quarter
  • Miami on their own 1 yard line runs, FUMBLES, JAX RECOVERS (6th Turnover)
  • 5 YD TD RUN: 62-7 JACKSONVILLE

Watching Jimmy Johnson stare in disbelief, his hands on his hips, as catastophe after catastrophe is worth watching. The missed tackles, the turnovers... it's really a sight to see. Watch it here, and comment if you do:

I remember listening to this game on the radio as we were out car shopping in Jacksonville. Everyone was coming unglued!

What a beat down… and what makes it more shocking is that it was Jacksonville doing it, brand new to the league, against icons in Jimmy Johnson and Dan Marino. Watch the video, the stoic, proud Jimmy Johnson takes crow and is forced to gag on it

My daughter and I were huge Jags fan. I went to the movies one Sunday night after the game in Jacksonville and met a guy coming out when I went in the restroom door. It was Mark Brunell and he was still hobbling after hurting his knee in the game that afternoon.

Yeah Jay Fieldler subbed in and hit 2-3 big time elite TD passes

I was in the stands the night after we beat Denver in the playoffs at 2am to welcome the team home with my teen daughter beside me. My wife just about had us committed.
Crazy to hear.. you never know who was where.. when they were... etc.

Thanks for sharing.

Being in a football powerhouse high also didn't hurt. We had Jaguars visit all the time and our good players allowed me to meet a lot of college football's great coaches when they came to visit them for recruiting. One day I walked by my principal's office, and he invited me in and introduced me to Lloyd Carr who was the coach at Michigan at the time. The ironic thing was that I was the girl's coach!
