Evolution is not ONLY the elimination of species.
Two points, if species that disappear are not replaced by better adapted species, no evolution has taken place. And the cessation of evolution is no portion of the definition of a mass extinction event. Your argument, as usual, is either incorrect, irrelevant or both.

In a complex interconnected system of nature nothing occurs in a vacuum. So it did.
