Only because it is the Great Circle route across the Atlantic. No, they don't have to, but it makes sense because it saves time and fuel. Ships bound for the Mediterranean take a more southern route. Been there, done that!

Yes — under current law Denmark recognizes Greenland’s right to independence, but with important conditions. Greenland is not already independent nor free to join another state/government without first becoming an independent country under international law. There has been no vote for independence, but they have voted in 1976 for more autonomy.

The benefit that Greenland stands to gain from US citizenship is in national security, primarily protection from Russia & China - not social services. They should consider the question if Denmark (even being part of NATO) is capable of providing the protection they may need.

In addition to the protection they get as being part of NATO, The 1951 treaty with US that gives the US access to Greenland for military bases also comes with guarantee that US will defend them if they are attracted. Aside from any defense agreements, the US would defend Greenland because we have a military base in Greenland that provides critical information on any attack force from the Arctic.

China has never fought a war that was more than 100 miles from it's border since WWII and in that war they had no choice. China is over 5000 miles from Greenland and there is nothing that China needs there.
