We can, except we don't really, and they are just as expensive as the Chinese version even with the tariffs.

Here's the problem with switching a supplier, you need to get user acceptance.

In my previous job, it often took six months to change suppliers. It took that long to make up prototypes, do the quality assurance testing, and get the vendor qualified with the customer.

In some cases, customers (and we are talking about big-name companies, such as John Deere and Harley-Davidson) refused to let resource components. And we weren't making anything complicated.

Current job, one of our major suppliers has announced a price increase. They make their product in the US, but they get components from China and other places. They have no plans to switch components, and we have no plans to switch suppliers. We are just going to pass the costs along to the customer, for now. There'll be a lot of negotiation back and forth, and everyone is going to feel a little pain.

For generations, American car companies received protection at home from emissions and safety standards imposed on car manufacturers in the rest of the world, but the result was that American cars aren't marketable in the rest of the world. Gasoline is $7 a gallon in Europe. That's the regular price. They don't want your gas guzzling SUV's in their narrow streets.

American cars were designed for American roads and driving conditions. The American government told them they didn't have to meet the same standards as the Europeans or the Asians. Your cars are too big, and too expensive to drive there. This is why GM and Chrysler have gone bankrupt. Ford was smart enough to design and build for foreign markets.
