Sadly, that's true. He spent the last several years of his life spewing hate, bigotry, and violent rhetoric.

The fact that he died violently isn't really a surprise. Most people like that do.

Sally Struthers considered it just another acting job. She tried to get out of her contract and leave the show around season 3-4 because she didn't feel stretched enough as an actress. She wanted more character development for Gloria.

But to Rob, I bet he saw it as his first real opportunity to vent his disagreement and opposition to The Man and The System.

How ironic that as an adult, he BECAME part of the system.

MeTV has four episodes on Sunday evenings, and it just reminds me of how two-dimensional Struthers' role was.

She was the least prominent character. The show was really a battle between Mike and Archie, where occasionally, Jean Stapleton would shine, but generally, Gloria was more of a supporting character with the occasional breakout episode. It was not until the Stivics moved out with a baby that the role of Gloria grew, unfortunately, by then, the show was not funny anymore and it had become a rather somber series mostly about dealing with real-life problems and sadness.

And, as hard as I tried to hate Archie, he was still fifty times the man Stivic was.

Archie, like Jed Clampett, were both simply Hollywood's take on all conservatives. This is how they see them. All In The Family was really a subtle hit piece making fun of conservatism.

The show is now all about how graciously Archie and Edith deal with the slob who scarfs down their food and lives under their roof and spits in their faces.

Just last night I watched a show where Archie was up at 2AM worried about his job, in the kitchen making a sandwich waiting for a call from his plant, and Mike came down, walked in, sat down, and started eating Archie's sandwich without even bothering to ask if it was there for anyone else or was just sitting there for no reason.
