Tariffs, how they actually work

Shogun, Show Your Gun

If they attack anybody, it'll be the gutless parasites in their own Sphere of Influence, which is no concern of ours. What if the Chinese had military bases all over the Gulf of America, like we have over there?
Your argument undoubtedly appeals to the chicoms and America-haters from the UN to the DNC

But I love this country and it doesent work on me

The increased tariffs are trying to do what in that instance? Trying to move $2 in profit to the US for back breaking clothing sewing work? What is the purpose? What are we doing? Its retarded. It would cost $30 to make that in the US.
if the tariffs make the Chinese shirt costs $30 to make in the US, then the tariffs worked. it's really not complicated. it's all about making American products sell in America. Sorry if that is too complicated for you to grasp.

No, it wouldn't since that is likely going to price cars so high that nobody but the elite can afford a new one. The idea that America can maximize revenue at the expense of Americans is criminal.
you just refuse to understand, I am done with you.

Foreign countries dont make any money. American companies source stuff for the lowest cost they can and pass that savings into the market.
  • Ralph Laruen makes a polo in China for $16. The factory profits $2.
  • Its shipped to the US for $2 and the freight company profits 50 cents
  • The shirt has a tariff for $2 and the US profits $2.
  • Ralph Lauren sells the shirt to Macy's for $40 and profits $20
  • Macy's sells the $99 ticketed shirt to Me for $80 on sale and profits $40

So to recap:
  • The Chinese factory made $2
  • The international freight company make 50 cents
  • Ralph Lauren made $20
  • Macy's made $40
So what exactly is the problem here?????????????????????????
the problem is that you do not understand how tariffs or the economy work.

First, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows how tariffs work more than i do. I provided a pretty solid breakdown and your paper thin post is pretty throw away in value.

The economy isnt a machine its an organism so to say anyone knows exactly how it works is a lie. Much like the human body you can influence how it works but you cant predict it all.

your basic misunderstanding of tariffs is that you claim that they cause the prices of domestically produced goods to rise. That is simply not true.

1. Show me where you are claiming I made that statement. I havent made that claim.
2. However, it actually does/can drive domestic prices up indirectly
A) Domestically produced product almost always uses imported materials
B) If import items go up in price domestic items will follow and go up in price as the demand goes up for domestic items.
3. Still I made that claim nowhere above because I dont think you need to argue that to show tariffs are destructive and drive prices up.

Simple question…

Is wheat/corn/soybeans a domestically produced product?

The Cold War Needs to Be Put in Deep-Freeze

I love doubling my country's wealth through a win/win economic alliance with China, Russia, and India. I hate the Cold War nostalgia promoted by Neo-Con Chickenhawks, who never should have become prominent in this country.

Our economy has grown since trade with china

But it has not grown for everyone

Middle class factory workers who once had good blue collar jobs are struggling to stay afloat as stock clerks st Walmart

Tariffs are a fee put on foreign products imported into the US for sale to Americans. Their purpose is to help american producers compete with cheap foreign goods. they do not increase the price of american goods sold in america. If you insist on buying Chinese goods you will pay a tariff. The way to avoid that is to buy american made products.

For example: Italy puts a 100% tariff on Harleys sold in Italy. Why? so Italians will buy Italian motorcycles. its simple and it works. It amazes me how the left is unable to understand this simple concept. Foreign countries have been putting tariffs on american goods for years. Trump is merely doing the same thing to them.

If you hate tariffs, the fix is simple: Buy American.

Explain how far left protectionist tariff wars work to an American soy farmer, genius.

Buying Only American-Made Goods Comes at a Cost. While the idea of buying exclusively American-made products may sound patriotic, the reality is more complicated. Doing so often means paying higher prices, settling for lower quality, or simply going without. Many essential goods like televisions, most electronics, and a significant portion of our clothing are no longer manufactured in the U.S. and likely never will be again.

Tariffs, often framed as a tool to protect domestic industry, are essentially a tax on consumers. They force people to pay more for less, all in the hope that production will return home. But this strategy rarely works as intended.

When countries enter into a tariff war, each responding with its own set of trade barriers, it undermines the very purpose of global trade: allowing nations to specialize in what they produce best. In a healthy global market, it’s the consumer, not the government who decides what products succeed.

Tariffs effect supply and demand and that factor isn't tossed out the window. When OPEC cuts supply our oil companies don't experience any increase in production costs, yet our gasoline prices go up. Also, our labor unions will certainly see protectionism as beneficial towards their own self-interest.

True. Labor unions benefit from tariffs, but historically prices do go up if the tariffs are large enough and last long enough. So, lots of other people are negatively affected cuz their dollars don't stretch as far as they used to. It hasn't happened yet for the current tariffs that Trump applied, but I think it will.

Trump's motive for increasing tariffs may well be applauded but the likelihood of it making America great again is rather poor.

Historically, increasing tariffs have had mixed results in bringing business back to the U.S., but modern economic analysis and recent evidence indicate they are largely ineffective and carry significant negative consequences. While targeted gains may occur in a few protected sectors, they often come at a net loss to the wider economy and to consumers.

Whenever government protects businesses that can not compete, they become less completive.

Find me an American made TV.
We used to have that option. But then other countries put tarrifs on ours and we didn’t do the same so they and their cheap labor and closed markets make them now.

It’s amazing how nobody on your side has to ask about finding anything made in China.

Your logic is a bit askew IMHO. I do not see the logic behind buying American stuff and when foreign countries apply tariffs to our exports. One does not influence the other, unless I am missing something.

Here's the problem with buying American stuff: it costs more than the imported stuff and it will cost just as much once a tariff is applied to the foreign stuff. Maybe in some cases American consumers will stop buying either product cuz it costs too much for them to afford. Maybe they'll go without or find a cheaper alternative. OR, they pay a higher price for the same thing, and that is called inflation. It is also called a lower standard of living cuz now your dollars won't buy as much as it used to.

And spare me the meme that inflation hasn't risen so far, and that is true. But it will eventually begin to rise if Trump's tariffs remain in place. It has to, when prices go up for the same thing you have inflation. The rich people can afford it, but the people on the other end of the income ladder cannot.
