ZURICH – Director Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss police as he flew in for the Zurich Film Festival and faces possible extradition to the United States for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, authorities said Sunday.

Polanski was scheduled to receive an honorary award at the festival when he was apprehended Saturday at the airport, the Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement. It said U.S. authorities have sought the arrest of the 76-year-old director around the world since 2005.

This case is a classic example of what's wrong with the Justice system all around.

This case is interesting because it puts the Libertarians in an untenable position.
The victim wants the case to go away. Polanski wants the case to go away. So what business is it of the gov't to go enforce the judgment?

you're absolutely right. just because he drugged and raped a thirteen year old is no reason the mean old government should stick its nose in. after all, she was asking for it.

The victim, now in her 40s, is happy to let the whole thing go. The perp is happy to let the whole thing go. A lot of his friends and supporters think something that happened 30+ years ago ought to be water under teh bridge.
So why should the gov't prosecute?

So why should the gov't prosecute?

a) because he pleaded guilty to the original crime and then fled before being sentenced.
b) because he is a fugitive from justice . see a) above.
c) it is the government's job to prosecute criminals, including rich pedophiles who pay off their victims and then flee.

this really isn't that complicated. what part baffles you?

Oh I agree. They need to haul his sorry ass back here and stick it in jail. Lapse of time doesn't diminish the crime, nor does the attitude of the victim.
But it is a problem for Libertarians who think the gov't has no business enforcing morality, which is basically what they are doing in this case.

I havn't heard a word about an aditional charge for fleeing from incarceration.

In most states that is the same as escaping prison and carries an additional 2 to 7 years sentence.

Why do you think Libertarians wouldn't want him to be prosecuted? I'm curious to where there beliefs says this.

I can't fathom how the Hollywood types can justify the raping of a 13 year old by a 44 yr old man. Thats 8th grade.

They will pull out some Priest who molested kids 30 years ago and scream for his head while in the case of their idol Polanski they whine...it was so long ago nobody cares anymore

Justice has to be seen to be done. The law is the law.

I'm really surprised about the Swiss getting themselves in the middle of this. I suspect someone made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

it is considered a crime AGAINST THE STATE, as well...her forgiveness now, does not count.

So the State has morals? The state is a separate being, like individuals? How does the state suffer from this private act between two people?

Don't bring the Libertarians into this! Del spelled it out quite nicely. The guy is guilty and should go to jail.
