Supreme Court limits key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act

SCOTUS just made it worse. Pass a law that outlaws Gerrymandering.
JFC, do we need to bring out the fricking sock puppets? It was made illegal in both CA and VA. And you cult made it legal again.

Grow a set and criticize your own cult for once in you life.

If it’s illegal in California, why are they trying redraw voting districts there which nearly eliminate Republican representation?

Because for the democrats, they never have enough power.
It is telling that in a state which is 40% Republican, Democrats want to redraw voting districts to achieve 90% Democratic representation.

They did the same thing in Virginia which is nearly a 50 /50 state.

It's a states rights issue as far as drawing districts.....So now you want the feds to determine congressional districts?

That's what they did with the Voting Act provisions. Now it's gone and states under the thumb of the Act can redraw proper districts, not just those that snake around and take in every black enclave.

As much as it sucks about what happened here in Virginia I'm OK with the VASC making the final determination.

While the court did not specifically rule out racially drawn districts, they significantly watered down any future opportunities to challenge districts on the basis of race. This means states that have had majority black VRA districts for decades will now be able to essentially draw them out unless it can be conclusively proven they are intentionally discriminating, which could be hard to do if they are keeping districts compact and within reasonable borders.

The decision cuts against 40 years of understanding that Congress wrote the VRA provision in question to push back not just on intentional racial discriminatory, but on redistricting plans that had the effect of discrimination, even if intentional discrimination couldn’t be proven.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote that VRA plaintiffs could only succeed “when the circumstances give rise to a strong inference that intentional discrimination occurred.”

That will make VRA redistricting cases “all but impossible to win,” said Omar Noureldin, senior vice president of the policy & litigation department of the voting rights group Common Cause.

Actually, the ruling does prohibit drawing district lines based on race.

I am sure the GOP acted similarly elsewhere.

Well, the era of the Republic lasted more than 250 years, a good run.

We are head into the One Party Majority State era.

The GOP has not done away with any independent commission that I am aware of. The only two states that have done it are California and Virginia, both run by Democrats. New York Democrats also altered theirs in 2024 after an independent master had drawn their districts after the prior census.
