American taxpayers are funding a grant of $1.25 million to create a cartoon superhero for Pakistan television. A government agency most of us never heard of, International Narcotics and Law Enforcement affairs (INL) issued a grant for two seasons, a total of 26 episodes, running around 11 minutes each of an animated cartoon to ā€œpromote security and stabilityā€ in Pakistan. The plan is to offer an animated superhero to feed Pakistani people aged 14-25 ā€œsocial messaging that reinforces INL goalsā€. This cartoon character will communicate helpful messages about gender equality, anti-corruption and the role of police in society.

The Obama administration seems to have great faith in the power of video.

Presumably the cartoon series will be along different lines than this Pakistani related bit of cartooning.

Who will this animated hero be? The grant doesnā€™t specify. Cultural influences effect young peopleā€™s choice of heroes. One such influence might be the recent act by some 50 Imams in Lahore, a main culture center in Pakistan. These Imams have sanctioned transgender marriage, providing the participants look like the gender they claim to be. This group also said, ā€œany act intended to ā€˜humiliate, insult or teaseā€™ transgender individuals should be considered a crime under Islam.ā€

Maybe the cartoon character that will lecture Pakistani youth on womenā€™s empowerment and religious tolerance will look like Bruce Jenner. Wait. Heā€™s an American hero. Or he was, now she is, or something. Well, surely with 1.25 million dollars, the people doing the films will figure it out.

You have to wonder. Why is the American taxpayer funding grants to make animated features for Pakistanis? Sure, it sounds like a good cause. Who isnā€™t for encouraging young people not to take drugs, not break the law and stuff like that? However, we hear so much talk about how Americans keep sticking their noses into other countriesā€™ business. We are arrogant and bossy. Isnā€™t this cartoon just more of that sort of audacious behavior?

Really, why are we spending over a million dollars on an animated cartoon for a dubious ally? Arenā€™t we already giving the Pakistan government enough money in ā€œaidā€? Do we need to spend another million and a quarter on cartoons?

And how many other government agencies we never heard of, are giving away millions of dollars for things, that if they asked our permission to spend our money on, weā€™d probably say no?
