Should suicide be legal in certain circumstances?
Lets say a health issue that is going to cause someone to suffer and will end up In death anyway.
Or lets say they have let their life get to a point that they are now older, maybe nearing retirement age and are realizing that they will never retire, they have lived in such a way that leaves them without any friends or emotional support.
are there cases where we as a society should accept and respect someones desire to end their life VS continuing on in their own personal hell.
If we did allow for it, what would be the process,, a place to go and do it? assistance? should there be a third party intervention prior to allowing it to evaluate the reasons.
If our family pet is suffering without hope of recovery, we are quick to bring it to the vet and have it put down, its the humane thing to do. Why do we treat people differently.

Suicide is legal.

Yes assisted suicide should be legal.

Yes assisted suicide should be legal.
actually suicide is not legal.
If you do it and succeed, naturally there is no legal repercussion for you.
However if you attempt and fail, you will end up in a psych ward against your will. To me that is a punishment.

Well people don't get arrested anymore, if a suicide fails they get put into a psychiatric ward to be observed and get treatment.

I myself think that it's a human right to self-determination, that it's your life and if you want to end it then that's nobodys business. However many people who attempt suicide don't want to die as such, they just want to run away from some problem or they're depressed, these are issues that can be helped, most problems can be helped with other people forming a constructive plan, depression can be helped with medication.

Suicide is a permanent solution to often a temporary problem.

Mr. Lucy is a Psychiatrist, this Friday he had to visit someone who had attempted to commit suicide and after him talking to them they didn't want to die as such, they just wanted to be somewhere else where their problem wasn't with them 24/7. Anyhow this person can now be given what help they need to deal with this problem, so it's not all on their shoulders, there's no need for them to die.

With regard to people who are terminally ill or have a non-terminal illness where there's no cure and they're in pain that not even Morphine can relieve, society has no right to demand that such people must suffer, these people have every right to ask for their suffering to be ended, to deny them this right it's the ultimate in cruelty and anyone who assists these souls to find the peace and relief that they seek is performing a compassionate service and should face no criminal charges.

I had a CDZ thread on this subject awhile ago. Definitely for end of life scenarios. People with terminal illnesses are forced to live in horrible pain. The cost factor associated with end of life care and pain management is astronomical, but cost reduction shouldn't be the primary reason for assisted suicide. It is considered cruel to keep an old pet alive when it can't walk and is pain, but it's ok to keep Grandma hanging on?

You own that old dog. When medical care gets too expensive you just put him down and walk out the door. If you want veterinary standards for human treatment say so. Who do you want to be the "owner" and make these decisions?

If we get the universal health care coverage that liberals want, the government will be our owner. They pay the bills, they make the decisions. Will it really be cost effective to set Granma's broken leg? She's 80, how much longer will she walk. Put her down now before her broken leg turns into a broken hip.

If a person wants to kill themselves, let them. Statists do NOT know whats better for you.

The saying goes that there are only two sure things in life, that you will die and pay taxes. If it happens in this order, than the tax office will resurrect you anyway, and you will not die untill you pay, so good luck with it. By the way I prefer hitlers suicide law which was the same as murder law, so you were hanged for murdering yourself.
