Needless to say, relations between the US and China have not been particularly rosy lately. Viruses, threatened trade wars, the closure of consulates, and the nabbing of the occasional spy and/or sketchy moneyman have all contributed to an environment that has left many real, innocent students stuck in a more than awkward spot.
