The Shining---Do you recall Jack Torrance driving to the Overlook Hotel in the beginning of the book? He was driving a VW. He pulled it off to the side of the road and put his FOOT on the e-brake. IDK if you've ever driven a pre 75 VW, but if you have, you should know that they don't have foot e-brakes. King was/is a sloppy, overly-verbose, self-absorbed, egotistical writer and he's shown it his entire career. Who else would write a series of books under a pseudonym to prove that it wasn't his name that sold books. Richard Bachman? LMAO. But I read his stuff like millions of others, I just wouldn't put him in the camp with decent writers. Taste in literature is like anything else, whatever you like is what you like and I'm not making judgements--just not impressed with King's quality.
LOL, that makes it worse. He (or his editors) are not new to these types of mistakes. I recall another short story he wrote where he was talking about a sheriff sitting in his Ford and about three paragraphs later---on the facing page, the car was a Dodge. He made a number of automotive mistakes in Christine as well. King was popular and his name became the deciding factor in the sale of many of his books. People forgave his sloppiness and verbosity. As I said previously--I have read the majority of his works---including the non-fiction Danse Macabre and for many years enjoyed them. Then I became disillusioned with his work and less forgiving calling him a hack. There are many good writers that I don't like and many poor writers I find amusing. Literature is like wine---a good wine (or book) is one YOU like. I'm not making judgements. That may have been changed by an editor unfamiliar with VWs.

That's the way it should be. If your parents were okay with you reading his fiction, that's on them, but many of his books are not appropriate for young children to read and should not be in libraries where they can get hold of them.Steven King says he is now the most banned author in the US. Most of it comes from school libraries.
I think it is a real shame. He was probably one of my most beloved authors growing up, I read so many of his books. Censorship and banning books is just wrong. I read many of his books from the age of like 11 till I was an adult and I turned out fine. No criminal record, good grades, Master's Degree in college, a solid work history, etc.
I had a reading teacher and a study hall teacher tell me in 6th grade I was no longer allowed to read Steven King books in school. I was told they were inappropriate for my age and the teachers went on to totally bad mouth Steven King saying how filthy and awful his books were.
I still read his books anyway, but at home all through school.
King didn't realise Freedom of Speech doesn't exist in the US.Steven King says he is now the most banned author in the US. Most of it comes from school libraries.

King didn't realise [sic] Freedom of Speech doesn't exist in the US.
He could be the nicest guy in the world and it wouldn't change the fact that many of his books are not appropriate for young children to read.King's loved up here....given millions in philanthropic causes in Bangor....
Yeah, that whole "Publish whatever I want and not even get hassled by the government" thing has completely hoodwinked him.King didn't realise Freedom of Speech doesn't exist in the US.

Yet they were for decades...?He could be the nicest guy in the world and it wouldn't change the fact that many of his books are not appropriate for young children to read.
When some Yanks throw stupid comments about Freedom of Expression on relevent UK and EU threads, I simply throw them back. Then the "disagree" and "fake news" reactions appear, lol.Yeah, that whole "Publish whatever I want and not even get hassled by the government" thing has completely hoodwinked him.
Do your UK and EU gov'ts allow porn in your primary school libraries? Try being more honest in your posts. The complaint is about SK's profanity laced novels being allowed in primary school libraries. There haven't been any public libraries that have banned anything. When some Yanks throw stupid comments about Freedom of Expression on relevent UK and EU threads, I simply throw them back. Then the "disagree" and "fake news" reactions appear, lol.
It is sophistry for millionaire author whose books can be obtained by adults anywhere they look to complain about being banned because some schools decide his works are not appropriate for small children. He doesn't have to deal with a child terrified to turn the light off at bedtime. When some Yanks throw stupid comments about Freedom of Expression on relevent UK and EU threads, I simply throw them back. Then the "disagree" and "fake news" reactions appear, lol.
Because you're not being honest. When some Yanks throw stupid comments about Freedom of Expression on relevent UK and EU threads, I simply throw them back. Then the "disagree" and "fake news" reactions appear, lol.
This thread is ridiculous.
If I wanted them, I could have a copy (hardcover or softcover or ebook) of every single book King ever wrote using any of his nom de plumes.
WooooshAre you seriously comparing Stephen King to Playboy Magazine?
