The political organization led by Democratic titan Stacey Abrams is branching out into paying off medical debts.

The Fair Fight Political Action Committee on Wednesday told The Associated Press it has donated $1.34 million from its political action committee to the nonprofit organization RIP Medical Debt to wipe out debt with a face value of $212 million that is owed by 108,000 people in Georgia, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Lauren Groh-Wargo CEO of allied group Fair Fight Action and senior adviser to the PAC said paying off medical debt is another facet of the group’s advocacy seeking expansion of Medicaid coverage in the 12 states that have refused to expand the health insurance to all poorer adults.

“What is so important about this is the tie between Medicaid expansion and just crushing medical debt,” Groh-Wargo said.

These debt collectors contact the debtors and offer a deal. Pay off the greatly discounted debt and clear it. They also warn the debtor that the entirety of the original amount, less the discount paid,, is now counted as income. They will get a 1099 for the difference. There will be a whole lot of people surprised by the IRS.

I had a medical debt years ago and offered to clear it for less (just as an insurance company would do) and never was issued a 1099.

My daughter in law's sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. She applied to a cancer charity and got top notch care. Never had to pay a dime. Thanks to all those rich people who support that charity.

And yet Abrams for being bashed for wanting to help people.

My co-workers now husband was fired from a job for missing too many days, then he ended up in the ER and they found he has Crohn's and almost died. He spent 5 days in the ICU without insurance. His medical bill was more than some people make in a lifetime. And the follow on treatment for Crohn's is damn expensive and he had trouble getting it due to his massive unpaid hospital bill.

They did not even get married for years due to his bad credit and she did not want it messing up hers.

The idea that people only have medical debt due to their own fault is a sick joke
