Dividing up Iraq into a Sunni section, a Shiite section and a Kurd section. The Obama Admin. says they want a united Iraq. I can't see how dividing it or unifying it is possible. All i can see is a larger regional religious war, with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Kuwait, U.A.E., Dubai, Egypt, Somalia, and even Afghanistan and Pakistan getting involved. And you Know China and Russia will too, not to mention the U.S..

If Iraq is divided, who gets to decide how? The U.N.? Hell, that's why we have this mess now!
Anybody think the Sunni or the Shiites are going to allow the Kurds to take the oil fields in the north? Turkey?

Gotta admit, this is a great distraction from Iran's nukes. What's Israel gonna do to redirect attention?

How much are the cons going to want to spend on this? Graham and McCain may run in 2016, just on the WWIII issue.

There is nothing more short sighted than thinking that splitting Iraq into Sunni, Shia and Kurd sections will end the conflict. These differences are not political. They are not motivated by a desire for autonomy. Sunnis believe they have a religious mandate to kill Shia. Giving Shia a state isn't going to change that.

Give the Kurds their own state and Turkey will be able to declare war without taking on the whole of Iraq.

If Iraq is split up, it will be a green light for the cons to split up the U.S.

The guys with the guns, of course. The UN has no military. It has no power to draw and maintain borders. Unless there are nations willing to use their military and manpower to enforce UNSC resolutions they are worthless.

One of the reasons for the mess is how the Allies divided up the Ottoman Empire after WWI. And of course how the West has administered, controlled, meddled and exploited those territories over the past hundred years or so is another.

Nothing bad can ever happen when white people arbitrarily draw imaginary lines on a map of the Middle East where there aren't any white people.

White people know what's best for everyone.

Every tribe in Iraq has Sunnis and Shia in its ranks; every village, town, and city has a mix of the two communities. The most serious sectarian and ethnic tensions in Iraq's modern history stem from the 2003 US invasion/occupation, and if Iraq divides into three mini-states the most violent sectarians would lead each enclave; only the oil companies, arms merchants, and warlords will be "winners."
